Policy & Advocacy

Why Advocacy Matters

PMDD is a recognised medical condition, yet many people in Aotearoa still struggle to access timely diagnosis, effective treatment, and compassionate care. Policy change is critical to reduce stigma, improve healthcare pathways, and ensure that PMDD is understood and supported at every level — from local communities to government systems.

Our Advocacy Priorities

  • Awareness in Healthcare - Training and resources for GPs, nurses, and mental health professionals to recognise PMDD and offer effective care.

  • Equitable Access to Treatment  - Advocating for subsidised and affordable treatment options, including medication, therapy, and hormonal care.

  • Workplace & Education - Support Promoting policies that protect and empower people living with PMDD in schools, universities, and workplaces.

  • Inclusion in Women’s & Mental Health -  Policy Ensuring PMDD is recognised in national health strategies and resourced accordingly.

  • Amplifying Lived Experience -  Making sure those most affected have a seat at the table when decisions are made.

How We Advocate

  • Partnering with health professionals, researchers, and community leaders.

  • Engaging with government and policy makers to highlight gaps and opportunities.

  • Raising awareness through media, campaigns, and public education.

  • Building coalitions with other women’s health and mental health organisations.

Your Voice Matters

Advocacy is stronger together. Here’s how you can be part of the change:

  • Share your story with us.

  • Join awareness campaigns.

  • Write to local MPs or decision makers (we’ll provide toolkits and templates).

  • Support our research and policy projects through donations or partnerships.

By combining lived experience, clinical expertise, and strong advocacy, the PMDD Project Aotearoa is working to ensure that PMDD is no longer overlooked in Aotearoa’s health system.
